  The Supreme Court of Nigeria has ordered the 36 State Governors to file their respective defence to a suit instituted against them by the Federal Government. The Federal Government is seeking for full autonomy for the 774 local governments in the country. The court also ordered the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi, to file his reply within two days, after receipt of their defence. Leading a seven-man panel, Justice Garba Lawal issued the order while ruling on an application for abridgment of time argued by the AGF. Justice Lawal said that the decision of the court was predicated on the national urgency of the suit and the non-objection from the Attorneys General of the states of the Federation. The Supreme Court held that filing of all processes and exchanging of same must be completed within the time and subsequently fixed June 13 for hearing of the suit.

  A student of Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo, Oyo State has been beaten to death by some of his colleagues for allegedly stealing a mobile phone belonging to one of them. A source in the school confirmed this to the News Agency of Nigeria on Saturday, with the student simply identified as Alex. It was learnt that they started beating their colleague at around 10pm on Friday after discovering that he was the one who stole the phone. The source, who pleaded anonymity because he was not authorised to speak on behalf of the university, said aside from stealing the phone, the student was also said to have transferred a certain amount from the phone to another account. The Executive Governor of Oyo State, Engr. Seyi Makinde, Thursday approved the immediate recruitment of doctors, nurses, consultants and other healthcare professionals in the state.   The Executive Governor of Oyo State, Engr. Seyi Makinde has announced that the government of Oyo State will recruit 7,000 teachers for public primary schools across the state. The state government also revealed plans to recruit 100 caregivers for special schools across the state. This was disclosed by the executive chairman of Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board, Nureni Adeniran, during a press conference held at the Board Room on Friday.   President Bola Tinubu will commission the 76.67km Iseyin-Fapote-Ogbomoso road, which is the latest of the road construction revolution embarked upon by Governor Seyi Makinde.   Two employees of FoodCo, Ring Road branch, Ibadan, Oyo State capital, Ebenezer Olusesi, 31 and Ibrahim Adeniyi, 41 were docked on Monday in an Iyaganku Chief Magistrate’s Court, Ibadan, for allegedly stealing two loaves of bread worth N2,600 from their employer. Olusesi, a baker and Adeniyi, a security guard, pleaded not guilty to theft. The prosecution counsel, Cpl. David Adepoju, told the court that the defendants allegedly conspired to commit the offence. Adepoju said the defendants on April 28 allegedly stole two loaves of bread worth N2,600, property of FoodCo Company, Ring Road, Ibadan, represented by Friday Achibong. He said the offence contravened Sections 390(a) and 516 of the Criminal Code Laws of Oyo State 2000.   The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested former Oyo Park Management System chairman, Alhaji Mukaila Lamidi popularly known as Auxiliary. Auxilliary was arrested around 4.00 pm on Tuesday in his House at Olodo in Ibadan and was driven along Ogungnade road, linked to Ibadan/Expressway. The development comes nearly a year after Auxiliary was declared wanted by the police over cases bordering on attempted murder, arms dealing, murder, armed robbery, and kidnapping at the Oke-ogun and Ibarapa axis of the state.
