  President Bola Tinubu has approved the full payment of allowances and match bonuses for the Super Falcons, ahead of their final match against Morocco in the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). The Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, made the announcement while speaking with reporters in Abuja on Thursday. He also confirmed that all entitlements up to and including the final on July 26, had been disbursed for immediate payment to players, coaches, and officials. Dikko described the gesture as “policy in motion” and a demonstration of a renewed commitment to Nigerian athletes under Tinubu’s leadership. He assured that this would now be the standard practice going forward, timely payments without drama or delays. Dikko noted that the move also extends to Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, who are set to begin their 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket campaign in Côte d’Ivoire, saying that D’Tigress will receive improved allowances and bonuses.

  The Oyo house of assembly has urged the Executive Arm of Government through the Ministry of environment and natural resources to put in place regulatory guidelines on scavenging to discourage criminal elements who use scavenger’s activities to perpetrate crimes. The House made the resolution while deliberating on the Report of the Committee on Environment, Water Resource and Ecology at its sitting on Tuesday. The House further charged the ministry of Environment and Natural Resources put machinery in motion, to register metal scavengers operating in the State to streamline their operation.   Shooting Stars of Sports Club of Ibadan have appointed Nurudeen Aweroro as their new head coach. Aweroro takes over from Gbenga Ogunbote, who parted ways with the club this week. The young tactician who left his role at Ikorodu City to take charge of the Oluyole Warriors, led the Lagos-based side to fourth position in the Nigeria Premier Football League, NPFL, last season. Aweroro took charge of the Oga Boys midway through the season following the sacking of  Mike Ozegbage. He is a CAF licensed coach  with experience from Remo Stars, and  MFM FC.

  The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, as a public holiday in honour of Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday. The announcement was made on Monday by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who confirmed that the decision followed the approval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The holiday is to allow Nigerians pay their respects as the late former president is laid to rest in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State.

  The Oyo State Executive Council has approved the immediate procurement of two surveillance aircraft, valued at N7,763,360,000, to bolster security across the state. This was disclosed in a statement on Wednesday by the Commissioner for Information, Dotun Oyelade, following the council’s meeting held on Tuesday. Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, made the announcement on Tuesday during the 2025 Policy Meeting on Admissions, held at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja. The age limit will be enforced via JAMB’s Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS), with a grace period for candidates turning 16 on or before August 31, 2025.   The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, has joined his ancestors. The monarch, who ascended the throne in July 2024, died in the early hours of Monday, July 7, 2025, after spending a year on the throne.  The demise of Oba Olakulehin, born July 5, 1935, is coming barely two days after celebrating his 90th birthday.  Tribune Online reports that Oba Olakulehin received the staff of office from Oyo State Governor Engr. Seyi Makinde, on July 12, 2024, as the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland.  Oba Olakulehin ascended the throne from the chieftancy rung of Balogun Olubadan, following the demise of Oba (Dr.) Moshood Lekan Balogun, Alli Okunmade II, who died at the age of 81 years on March 14, 2024.

  The Oyo State Government has announced scheduled dates for the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and Common Entrance examination across the state. The Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Hon. Olayiwola Olusegun in a statement on Saturday, informed the general public, especially parents, guardians and students in Junior Secondary Schools throughout the State, that the Ministry will conduct BECE between Monday 7″ July and Wednesday 16″ July, 2025. He added that the examination will commence by 9.30 am daily at the respective schools of the candidates. The Nigeria Football Federation confirmed the heartbreaking news on Thursday through a post shared on its official X handle. “Forever in our hearts, Dodo Mayana. We mourn the passing of legendary Super Eagles goalkeeper, Peter Rufai, a giant of Nigerian football and a 1994 AFCON champion. “Your legacy lives on between the sticks and beyond. Rest well, Peter Rufai,” the NFF’s tribute read. Widely known as Dodo Mayana, Rufai earned 65 caps for Nigeria and was a key figure in the country’s illustrious football era.  He played a pivotal role in securing Nigeria’s second AFCON title in Tunisia in 1994 and went on to feature at the FIFA World Cups in 1994 and 1998.

  Justice Uche Agomoh of the Federal High Court in Ibadan has convicted two social media influencers, Bukola Rufai and Abdulateef Jimoh, for abusing the Nigerian currency. The duo were arraigned by the EFCC on a one-count charge of currency mutilation after a viral TikTok video showed them spraying and trampling on naira notes on September 25, 2024. They pleaded guilty to the charge, which violates Section 21 of the Central Bank Act, 2007. The court convicted them and gave each a ₦50,000 option of fine without custodial sentencing. The EFCC stated that both individuals admitted to the offense and expressed remorse.

  Students of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, took to the streets on Tuesday in a massive protest against the recent decision by Governor Seyi Makinde to rename the institution after late former governor, Dr. Omololu Olunloyo. The students, in their numbers, blocked the main entrance of the institution’s South Campus and shut down other access gates, paralysing academic and administrative activities on campus. The protest also led to the total blockade of the busy Sango-Eleyele Road, leaving hundreds of commuters, staff, and residents stranded.
